About the math program in Cecil

My daughter is a product of the Cecil County public school system. She graduated in 2006 from North East High School 10th in her class (GPA was 3.85).

She took college classes during the summer of her sophomore and junior high school years, and took AP classes as soon as they were offered. She earned enough credits to graduate high school in her junior year, and used the modified student waiver to attend college rather than high school during her senior year. She also was inducted into the National Honor Society of Junior Colleges before she graduated from NEHS. An overachiever to say the least.

When she arrived at the University of Maryland, she already had 26 credits under her belt. Currently, she is working toward three degrees in math, physics and statistics. She shared with us that upon her arrival at the U. of Md., she felt ill-prepared when competing in their math arena against other students who where educated in other public schools in Maryland as well as other states and countries.

In my opinion, my daughter’s academic experiences in the Cecil County public school system were not average. She happens to be a very driven young lady. We are grateful that she has been able to take advantage of the opportunities that were available to her in Cecil County. Her academic situation is not the norm; I hope (and pray) that the average high school student will be able to keep their head above water.
